Voyaging Into the Mist - A Trip to Niagara Falls

By Josh Vanderwerf

We left for Niagara Falls last summer in August. My family had never been to Canada before. It was my first time leaving the country. The car ride was boring and there wasn’t much to do. When my family arrived at our hotel we checked in and a concierge assisted us in taking our luggage up to the room. We had a hotel directly across from Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. The first thing we did when we entered our room was look out the window at the astonishing Niagara Falls. I had never seen anything more astonishing than the Falls. My family literally stared at the Falls for 5 minutes. We didn’t know what to say. Our jaws dropped. During the evening after the sky turned dark blue, an array of every color lit up the Falls. They were even more beautiful at night.
There were many things to do at Niagara Falls. Some of the activities we did were journey behind the falls, saw a movie about insane and ridiculous people who jumped in a barrel and went down the Falls, and Maid of the Mist, the most exhilarating experience you’ll have at Niagara Falls. Journey behind the falls was pretty cool. We basically walked in a tunnel behind the Falls and learned some facts about the them. I found the movie we watched hilarious because of how blockheaded the people were for risking their lives just to become famous.
On the last day we were at the Falls, my dad and I went Maid of the Mist. This was the most fun I had during the trip. It was also the very last thing I did. As my dad and I were walking over to stand in line for Maid of the Mist, we glanced over at the ferry boat approaching the Falls. It almost looked like the boat was going to get sucked in by the powerful Falls.
“Do you think it’s safe to get that close to the Falls,” I asked my dad.
“We’ll find out,” he responded.
As we approached the line, we paid for our tickets and waited for what seemed like three hours. Everybody got their picture taken halfway through the line by a staff member. When we got closer to the front of the line we saw that they gave us ponchos to wear. They guaranteed that everybody would get soaked. My dad and I finally made our way to the front of the line. We gave them our tickets and they gave us ponchos. On the boat, there were two floors, and upper and lower floor. My dad and I decided to go on the lower floor because first of all, it was bigger than the upper floor which meant more room, and secondly because we wanted a spot on the side of the boat where we could see the water below us. After we boarded, we put our ponchos on and prepared to get soaked. When the boat first started, it was going at least 2 mph. If you looked over the edge, you could see thousands of minnows swimming right below the flying snowy white seagulls looking for fish to eat. After about a minute we began to speed up to a whole 5 mph! People started taking out their cameras, including my dad, to take pictures of the American and Canadian side of Niagara Falls. They were beautiful up close. The boat started to get closer to the Falls and we could feel the cool breezy mist of the Falls land on our faces. It felt refreshing. But when we got even closer the mist soon became spray and a spray became a huge rush of water.
“I think it’s time to put the camera away,” I insisted to my dad.
“Yea we probably should?” my dad yelled.
It was impossible to hear because of the roaring Falls. By the time I tried to tell him again he had already put the camera away. I thought we would get sucked in by the Falls because of how strong the undertow was. At first the ponchos helped, but after about a minute, water started sneaking underneath my poncho and I soon became drenched along with my dad.
“These ponchos sure helped,” I said to my dad sarcastically.
“Ha-ha yea,” my dad laughed.
The boat stayed at the foot of the Falls for about 5 minutes then turned around. For some people, the ponchos helped, but for others, it failed. When we got off the boat, the employees thanked us for coming and we gave them our dripping wet ponchos.
“That was fun,” I exclaimed.
“It sure was,” my dad replied.
“We should do it again sometime,” I suggested.
“Definitely,” my dad responded excitedly.
