Should High Schools Make Community Service Mandatory?

By Josh Vanderwerf

Community Service is something that needs to be done. Giving back to our communities is what keeps them alive. Our community will not last long if nobody helps out. Community service gives you a feeling of optimism and empowerment. It also gives a feeling that one person can make a difference. This is why schools should make community service mandatory (2).
The meaning of “community service” has changed tremendously over time. Back in the day when you served your community, you were known as socially acceptable. For teenagers, community service was a punishment. Between 1982 and 2002, two-thirds of all public schools required community service for the curriculum. Currently, community service is good for college application (1). So more people are doing community service for their college application instead of doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. The definition of community service has changed a lot. During our generation, we have to changed the definition of community service to be positive and uplifting.
In order to have a generation of students who are responsible we need to have them give back to the community by making community service mandatory. Lots of people take from their community, but they never give back. We need to give back to our community for it to survive. Community service makes you feel good inside. It
gives you a sense of accomplishment. Healthy communities require community service. Individuals need to help out their community instead of being selfish and not caring about them. Community service will make you a better individual and will prepare you for a great life.
However, forcing students to serve in the community can give them negative effects. They might not want to volunteer freely in the future if they are forced to serve in the community. Students should want to volunteer out of the goodness of their heart instead. It is wrong to force a student to serve in the community. If they are forced at a young age to do community service, there is a good chance they will not want to serve in the community in the future. Students should have a choice on whether they want to serve in their community or not, they should not be forced (5).
High Schools should make community service mandatory. Community service makes students feel like they have accomplished something and have done something good for the world. Community service will help shape a students’ character and will make them become a responsible young adult which will prepare them for the future.
