Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
By Josh Vanderwerf
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a term for psychological consequences of exposure to, or confrontation with, stressful experiences that the person experiences as highly traumatic. Some of these experiences could be actual or threatened death, a serious physical injury, or it could even be a threat to physical or psychological integrity. Some symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder are flashbacks or nightmares of something bad that occurred, difficulty falling or staying awake, and anger. Post-traumatic stress disorder runs in families. About 50-90% of people encounter trauma in their lifetime. But only 8% develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Some ways to diagnose PTSD are exposure to a traumatic event, flashbacks/nightmares of a bad experience, difficulty falling or staying asleep, anger, symptom duration more than a month, and problems with work/relationships. Different forms of psychotherapy are one treatment for PTSD. Some other treatments are cognitive therapy, and group therapy could be helpful also. Medication can also be taken to prevent PTSD symptoms but it cannot completely get rid of it. |
