Alternative Fuel Vehicles By Josh Vanderwerf Alternative fuel means fuel other than gasoline or diesel or any method that doesn’t use petroleum. Governments vehicle manufacturers around the world are working on figuring out alternative fuels because of possible restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions. The research they are doing is centered around hybrid vehicles which use electricity and internal combustion. One alternative fuel that is being considered is fuel cells which are alternative forms of combustion. Another alternative fuel could be alcohol. The alcohol would be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines. This has gained the attention of many people because it has many environmental and economical advantages over fossil fuels. Another method could be hydrogen based cars. A hydrogen car would use hydrogen as the primary source of power. Combustion and fuel-cell conversion or two methods the hydrogen would be used for. During combustion, the hydrogen burns in engines which is the same as traditional gas powered cars. During fuel-cell conversion, hydrogen is turned into electricity through fuel cells which power electric motors. Whichever method is used, water is the only byproduct from the hydrogen. There are very few of these hydrogen cars available. A lot of research is going in to create the new technology.
